Animal disease and the global community: the role of sustainable livestock production and other factors

The Brown Bag seminar will be presented by Manon Schuppers, M.Sc., Safe Food Solutions Incorporated (SAFOSO), Berne.

Ms Schuppers is a veterinary epidemiologist and consultant for SPS and risk assessment issues in relation to international trade of animals and animal products at SAFOSO. She will address the role of sustainable livestock production as well as other factors concerning animal disease management on a global scale.

Sustainable agriculture is commonly understood to include the use of healthy animals for food production. However, over the last few decades, several new diseases originating in animals have affected humans. What are the implications? The following questions will be addressed and discussed. Do current livestock production systems facilitate the creation of new diseases? What is the role of industrialized livestock production concerning this potential danger to public health? Would the use of less intensive production systems lower the probability of the appearance of new diseases? Finally, are there any other factors which could play a role in the emergence of new diseases?

This seminar will explore the possible causes for existing and emerging diseases worldwide and examine the perceived role of agricultural systems. It will also highlight measures that could be taken to reduce the risk of emerging diseases in the future.
